Mighty Steeple

Standing prominently at the corner of Canyon Golf Road and Wilderness Oak is a stone tower on the property of The Fellowship of San Antonio, behind Buckner Fanning Christian School. Visible from miles around, the tower has become one of Stone Oak's most noticeable landmarks, and many wonder about its function and location.

Years ago, the church had a vision of building a steeple symbolic of their faith. The $8 million " multi-purpose " building they had to construct left them with little money for the steeple they so desired.

Their prayers were answered when AT&T approached the church about the need for a cell tower due to poor cell phone reception in the Stone Oak and Canyon Springs areas. Sr. Pastor Ron Hill stated, " AT&T was going to build a tower-it was just a matter of who they could find willing to provide the property space, and we had been excited to build a steeple. A partnership developed at this point. "

The steeple cost of $1.5 million was fully funded by AT&T. Pastor Hill remarked, " The church saw this as an opportunity to finally build the steeple we had desired for many years. Our architect designed the steeple around the fiber optic tower AT&T needed. Needless to say, the beauty of the designed tower has benefited the church, AT&T, and the residents of the neighborhoods who happen to have cellular service with AT&T."

With the partnership, The Fellowship of San Antonio was able to carry out their vision: a beautiful native rock and window steeple with three crosses at the top, very symbolic to the Christian faith. " The triangular design stands for the Trinity - the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, " explained Pastor Hill. " The base of the tower is made of field stone, or ' rubble rock, ' as if it is coming up out of creation. Then the stone morphs into the beauty and symmetry of the cut stone to signify the ' refining ' of God in our lives. The Seven Windows are in reference to the Seven Fold Spirit of God and the three Crosses at the top are in reference to Calvary. "

The Fellowship of San Antonio stated, " It is our hope that the community finds this church landmark to also be a landmark for the community we love. "
